Performing Data is a review of Fleischmann and Strauss´ body of work from Virtual Reality (Home of the Brain, HoB Video), up to Mixed Reality (Murmuring Fields, MF Experiments Video, Mixed Reality Archive or Energie-Passagen), from Fluid (Liquid Views) to Rigid (Rigid Waves, RW Video) up to Floating Interface (Media Flow).
Monika Fleischmann and Wolfgang Strauss from the Fraunhofer Research show an intersection of the body and immaterial digital data. From Body Space (Virtual Striptease) to Knowledge Space (Semantic Map): Interactivity as an extension of touch is a central strategy of their work – interactivity with its complex relationship to reality, re-presentation and presence.
The body as interface and intersections to the disembodied digital information. Immersion in data flow causes productive moments of disturbance and suspension, and consequently – a feeling of real physical presence.
The Exhibition Performing Data includes works from the early 1990s, when the artists/scientists were co-founders of the ART+COM collective in 1987/88 in Berlin. Since 1992 they developed their work as research artists at KHM and GMD – the German National Research Center for Information Technology, since 1997 as directors of the Media Art & Research Studies (MARS) department and since 2001 at Fraunhofer Society, in the Institute for Media Communication (IMK) and for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS) in Sankt Augustin, Germany.

About Fleischmann & Strauss
German artists and scientists, Monika Fleischmann & Wolfgang Strauss, are considered pioneers of interactive media art. Since the very beginning of their artistic and scientific activity they have used computer both as a tool and medium. Their experimental research focuses on the interactivity in art and knowledge environment, as well as on the expanded and networked space used as interface. Learning new things from old things is one of the working methods applied to new media that they have invented for their use. Their ideas concerning visual presentation of information and computer-oriented models of navigation and dialogue have for twenty years now influenced the development of modern technoculture in the context of interactivity. The work of Monika Fleischmann & Wolfgang Strauss has earned them a Golden Nica of Prix Ars Electronica and numerous other honorary awards, and is constantly archived by ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Celebration of the Consumer in Karlsruhe
YOU_ser 2.0: Celebration of the consumer ist eine Weiterentwicklung der erfolgreichen Schau YOU_ser: Das Jahrhundert des Konsumenten, die bereits seit Oktober 2007 im ZKM | Medienmuseum gezeigt wird. Als »exhibition in progress« wurden seither immer wieder Teile der Ausstellung um neue Arbeiten ergänzt und Exponate ausgetauscht. Neu hinzu kommende Werke wie Liquid Views von Monika Fleischmann und Wolfgang Strauss (eine Reproduktion des Werkes von 1992/93) ergänzen die Exponate wie bspw. die Interfaces rund um die Medienkunst-Plattform netzspannung.org werden als performative Medien-Kunst-Archiv-Installationen gezeigt. Hier wird die partizipatorische Revolution des Web 2.0 im Ausstellungskontext sichtbar.

Raum- und zeitbasierte Interfaces als Zugang zur Web 2.0 Plattform netzspannung.org und die Arbeiten des digital sparks Wettbewerbs sind in eigenen Inszenierungen zu sehen. Die Aktivitäten der Community im netzkollektor von netzspannung.org zeichnen sich im Verlauf des Ausstellungsprozesses ab.
Liquid Views
Mit dem Ende der Ausstellung Youniverse in Sevilla wird ab 2. Mai 2009 Liquid Views wieder in Karlsruhe gezeigt. Als eines der Meisterwerke der Medienkunst war diese Arbeit 1997 zur Eröffnung des ZKM gezeigt worden. Liquid Views war in der Version von 1992-93 (mit Christian Bohn) sechs Jahre und drei Rechnerportierungen lang in mehr als 50 kulturell unterschiedlichen Orten ausgestellt und hat die kulturellen Unterschiede der Akteure zum Sprechen gebracht. Die Installation war 1997 Teil der Eröffnungsausstellung des ZKM | Medienmuseums in Karlsruhe. Seit 2008 wird das reproduzierte Werk wieder ausgestellt.
Mit YOU_ser I und II widmet sich das ZKM-Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie in Karlsruhe den Auswirkungen der netzbasierten, globalen Kreation auf Kunst und Gesellschaft. Die neuen Community Portale bieten Raum für die Äusserungen von Millionen von Menschen. Die in der Ausstellung präsentierten Installationen übertragen das im Internet entwickelte Potenzial der Mitgestaltung auf die Besucher. Der Besucher wird selbst zum Produzenten und Programmgestalter, zum You_ser 2.0.

Designing Interactive Timelines

The Human-Computer-Interface enables for interaction with digital media and for communication with other people. Digital interactive communication includes the generation of data and structuring of information, the digital storing and reciprocal transfer (exchange), access and distribution of data between people or “intelligent” objects. This form of communication is interactive or participatory. Digital interactivity is a new cultural technique whose concept and design determines success or failure of communication. The HCI Summer Camp deals with the history of human-computer-interaction, with analysis and development of new concepts, with interactive staging and design of the interface.
The problem is searching and finding in timelines. The goal is to provide an interface design for the presentation of the history of the interface, such as an interactive timeline as a multi-track machine, which can be equipped by the users with their own information.

Das Human-Computer-Interface ermöglicht die Interaktion mit digitalen Medien und die Kommunikation mit anderen Menschen. Digitale interaktive Kommunikation umfasst die Generierung von Daten und die Strukturierung von Information, die digitale Speicherung und den gegenseitigen Transfer (Austausch), den Zugang und die Verteilung von Daten zwischen den Menschen oder “intelligenten” Objekten. Diese Form der Kommunikation ist interaktiv oder partizipativ. Digital Interaktivität ist eine neue Kulturtechnik, deren Konzept und Design den Erfolg oder das Scheitern der Kommunikation bestimmt. Das HCI Summercamp befasst sich mit der Geschichte der Mensch-Computer-Interaktion, mit der Analyse und Entwicklung neuer Konzepte, mit interaktiver Inszenierung und der Gestaltung des Interface.
Das Problem ist, das Suchen und Finden in Zeitleisten. Ziel ist es, eine Schnittstelle für die Darstellung der Geschichte der Schnittstelle zu entwerfen, z. B. eine interaktive Zeitleiste als Mehrspurmaschine, die von den Nutzern mit eigener Information bestückt werden kann.
